Indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers for decades has  resulted in the decline of organic matter content of soils to less than one per cent. The use of pesticides  has led to pest resurgence and difficulty in controlling weeds. Indiscriminate use of artificial fertilizer and  pesticide has caused severe water  and environmental pollution.
